For two weeks each spring, the Synchronous Fireflies (Photinus carolinus) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park put on a nightly show for their mating display. This event draws crowds from near and far to learn about and enjoy a natural marvel.
Discover Life in America (DLiA) has been at the forefront of the research and education of this phenomenon. This small 501(c)(3) non-profit is based out of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is comprised of dedicated researchers that are working to identify and catalog every single one of the more than 60,000 species that call the park home. Go to their site for more information: https://dlia.org/.
With a mission of "Discovering, understanding, and conserving biological diversity", in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, DLiA is an organization we at Gatewood Appalachia are thrilled to support. We have designed this Glow in the Dark Synchronous Firefly Hard Enamel pin to celebrate Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the hard work of DLiA. A percentage of net proceeds of each sale of this pin will be donated to DLiA.
